description

Come visit Tazewell County's historic rural sites and small towns to rediscover life the way it used to be: folksy, relaxed, safe, quiet, neighborly.

Tazewell County nurtures a special position in the majestic Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia. The Nature Conservancy declared the Clinch River Basin to be one of only twenty “Last Great Places” in the world (1990), and this basin, supporting “…the world’s largest collection of rare and endangered fresh water species,” begins in Tazewell County.

Prior to the American Revolution, the Southwest Virginia area was a fruitful and valued hunting ground for the Cherokee Indian tribes,to the south, and the Shawnee tribes along the Ohio River. The area's abundance of wild game, which was the source of frequent skirmishes among these Indian tribes , also drew trappers from Eastern Virginia.

Tazewell County, Virginia has a rich heritage with beautiful scenery. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia we are a vacation and sportsman's paradise. This Southwestern Virginia County lies on the Alleghany Plateau and is characterized by its mountainous terrain. A secondary continental divide seperates the watersheds to the New River Valley and the Tennessee River Valley.

Become immersed in nature's grandeur as you wander off the main roads, hike along the Appalachian Trail, or enjoy a pioneering experience in a reconstructed pioneer settlement and museum. Tazewell County offers many activities for every age.
