Small Town Charm…Big Time Adventure
Wytheville is located among the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia. Visitors to the area will discover a town steeped with history, loaded with one of a kind attractions, unique shopping opportunities, and rich with outdoor activities. The charm and beauty of this small southern town attracts thousands of visitors a year who are eager to experience what Wytheville and the surrounding area has to offer.
Wytheville is a prime destination for nature lovers looking for adventure. The vast landscape provides outdoor enthusiast numerous options, ranging from simple family fun to extreme adventure.
The New River Trail State Park offers both. Twenty miles of this linear park runs through Wythe County with the majority of the trail paralleling the second oldest river in the world, the New River. The multi-use trail is ideal for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. The Mill Race campground offers family friendly primitive tent camping right on the river. For the more adventures wishing to escape the security of land the New River provides plenty of excitement for whitewater enthusiasts, with several major Class II and III rapids. There is also an abundance of flat water to please canoeists. The New River offers anglers some of the best fishing in the state. There is an abundance of bass varieties, muskellunge, walleye, black crappie, catfish, yellow perch, redbreast sunfish, and bluegill.
For those individuals whose passion is hunting, the Jefferson National Forest offers hundreds of acres of forest for hunting squirrel, turkey, coyote, or trophy deer. Miles of hiking trails wind their way through the Jefferson National Forest providing hikers amazing year around views of the beautiful scenery, plants, trees, and native animal life. If you want to experience the beautiful mountain scenery from the convenience of your automobile, a road trip on the Big Walker Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway should be on your itinerary. The scenic byway passes through 16 miles of Jefferson National Forest with numerous Virginia Birding Trail sites that are included along the way. Located at the foot of Big Walker Mountain is Stony Fork Campground. Situated in the woodland campground, Stony Creek winds its way through the campground and provides pristine waters for trout fishing.
Located on 330 acres of Wythe County parkland, just west of Wytheville, nature lovers enjoy Rural Retreat Lake. This 90-acre lake offers excellent fishing from its cool mountain waters. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish including largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, muskellunge and channel catfish. The campground has 72 convenient wooded sites with hookups, a refreshing swimming pool, picnic area, and miles of hiking trails.
Anglers can test their fly fishing skills at the Crystal Springs Watershed property located off 21 South in Wythe County. The stream that meanders through the valley will soon be Wythe County’s first special regulation trout stream and provide fisherman a chance to catch and release wild Rainbow Trout. Miles of hiking trails abound on this scenic property providing access to the Big Survey Wildlife Management Area.
The 7,500-acre Big Survey Wildlife Management Area rests atop four mountain ridges in the middle of Wythe County, overlooking Wytheville. Breathtaking 360 degree views can be experienced with a hike to the ridge tops. This woodland area provides excellent deer, turkey and squirrel hunting.
With so many possibilities it’s no wonder so many people make Wytheville their vacation destination. Wytheville is truly a place where visitors will experience small town charm and BIG TIME ADVENTURE!
