description

Bordered on three sides by the New River and neatly tucked into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Radford features an achingly picturesque setting for a diverse and charming array of activities. A small city with big opportunities, visitors can enjoy a rich culture and interesting historical sites, as well as an abundance of recreational offerings.

Two of Radford’s 14 parks offer ready access to the New River, where enthusiasts can boat, kayak, canoe, or tube on the gentle, clear water. The fish are also constantly biting, with muskie and smallmouth bass being the favorites. Take to the river on your own or leave it to the local experts and book a guided fishing trip. The parks also offer numerous picnicking, hiking, and recreation opportunities, as well as four stops on the Virginia Wildlife & Birding Trail.

Points on Virginia’s Civil War Trail and Wilderness Road can also be found in Radford, in addition to the homestead of pioneer Mary Draper Ingles, best known for her 700+ mile trek back home after being kidnapped by a Shawnee tribe.

Wade fishing is extremely popular off the banks of Bisset Park near the Rt. 11 bridge that spans high above the New River. Whether its small mouth bass or giant muskie, the fish are almost always biting. In fact, Radford’s stretch of the New River has been the site of many record breaking catches in recent years including a 45 lb. muskie and an 8 lb 1 oz smallmouth that were caught on Radford’s stretch of the New River.

Also on the New River, you will find; Muskellunge (muskie), Smallmouth (black) Bass, Striped Bass (striper), Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Walleye, Rock Bass, White Bass, Hybrid, Black Crappie, Redbreast Sunfish, Bluegill, Yellow Perch

Flowing 320 miles through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, the New River is a true recreation destination for all outdoor lovers.

Boat launches are available just off exit 105, at Riverview Park, Dudley’s Landing, and near Radford University. Canoes, kayaks and inner tubes can also be easily dropped in the water at various points in Bisset Park, which extends more than 90 acres right on the banks of the New.
