description

Wise County, located in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia is home to high mountain trout streams and lakes that are a bass, bluegill and Crappie angler's dream. Pound Lake, The Pound River, John Flannagan Reservoir, Keokee Lake, as well as, Little Stoney Creek,The Powell River Guest River and several municipal reservoirs, offer a wide range of fishing opportunities that are off the beaten path and offer a true "Mountain" fishing experience.

The City of Norton lies at the entrance to the Jefferson National Forest, 2,000 feet lower than High Knob which has an elevation of 4, 120 feet.  Easy access is by US 23 or US Alt 58 which intersects in Norton.  Norton has four motels with over 350 beds with meeting and connection facilities.

Norton maintains two reservoirs for drinking water.  The larger, upper reservoir is stocked annually and has children fishing days along with the famous “Benge” money contest.  The lower reservoir has recently opened to fishing after being closed for over 50 years.  Five and seven pounders are plentiful but must be released.  Small electrical motor boats are approved on the upper reservoir, while the lower reservoir is fishing from the bank only.

Norton is only 30 minutes from the trout streams of the Powell, Little Stoney, Fletcher Hole, Big Stoney, North Fork of the Pound and Big Cherry reservoir; for added intrigue, drive one hour to the Corp of Engineers Flannigan Dam Reservoir.  Lest we forget, The Tail of Waters of the Pound River is a certified trophy trout stream.

Other nearby fishing opportunities include Bark Camp Lake, Keokee Lake, and the Clinch and Holston Rivers.
