Mecklenburg County
Fishermen all along the eastern seaboard are well aware of our two primary bodies of water, Kerr Lake (locally known as Bugg’s Island Lake), and Lake Gaston.
Straddling the VA/NC border, Kerr Lake is Virginia’s largest lake, coming in at 50,000 acres and 800 miles of shoreline. A full schedule of largemouth bass, crappie and striper tournaments happen here year-round, and we have a very healthy fishery for all of these. In addition, we have some walleye hotspots, plenty of gar (great for bowfishing!), and even hold the state record for freshwater drum and standing world record for blue catfish. Lake Gaston offers healthy populations of crappie, walleye, and largemouth bass. More of a river fisherman? Check out the Meherrin River and Aaron’s Creek.
Home to numerous unique small towns, our area offers plenty to do and places to eat for the lone fisherman or a family fishing vacation. Guides and outfitters are plentiful, and visitors can overnight in top chain hotels in South Hill, lakefront hotels in Clarksville, boutique bed & breakfasts, vacation rental homes, and of course one of many waterfront campgrounds on both lakes.
