Campbell County
Campbell County features conveniently located state-maintained boat launches and egress points. Spend anywhere from a few hours to a few days fishing, paddling, and boating in the Upper Staunton River from Leesville Lake to Brookneal. In spring, spawning striped bass are plentiful, inspiring a pair of popular tournaments for striped bass and catfish (pre-register at BrooknealCatfishTournament.com).
The Leesville Dam Tailrace has some of the best walleye fishing in Virginia. With areas of glass-like serenity along wooded shorelines to Class II & III rapids below Long Island Park, the rich, unspoiled ecology of the river encourages vigorous growth with ample food sources for its catfish and bass. The braided channels below Long Island provide a variety of riffles, runs, pools, and eddies to suit any fisherman’s preference.
The Vic Thomas State Fish Hatchery raises striped bass and walleye to stock rivers, lakes, and reservoirs across Virginia. Channel Catfish are more abundant in the Staunton River than any other river in the state. Flathead catfish up to 60 inches have been sampled there. Along the northern border of the County, you can fish the beautiful James River along Mt. Athos Road to Joshua Falls Boat Landing. Campbell County also features numerous fish-filled creeks leading to the lakes and rivers.
