Russell County
Russell County has multiple Nature Preserves and Wildlife Management Areas that are home to some of the best rivers, lakes and streams in Southwest Virginia, including the renowned Clinch River. The Clinch River is the crown of the mountain empire flowing southwestward from its origin near the town of Tazewell. The Clinch has a story and a character all its own. The Clinch River State Park is currently under development with parts already open for fishing and a public boat launch available for boat access to the Clinch River at Atrip in Russell County.
The variety of sport fish is what makes the Clinch a great destination for anglers. Russell County also boasts quality flyfishing destinations, guided kayak fishing and bank fishing trips. If you just want to set out on your own, there are numerous access points with float times ranging from just around an hour to nine hours. Stay awhile at a local camping area or hotel and enjoy freshwater fishing for days. The Clinch River is a year-round fishery with stream flows being the only limiting factor. The best months to fish the Clinch are March through August and October through November.
